Electro-Acupuncture vs Conventional Acupuncture
Electro acupuncture and conventional acupuncture. What Acupuncture Hub Gold Coast patients need to know.
A modern boost for an ancient therapy.
Traditional acupuncture has helped Currumbin locals manage pain for many years. Electro acupuncture uses the same fine, sterile needles and adds a gentle electrical pulse. The pulse feels like a soft tap or hum, not a shock. This extra stimulus often brings faster relief, deeper muscle release and longer lasting change without extra discomfort. We service Tugun, Tweed Head and Coolangatta.
How an electro acupuncture session runs
Your visit at our Currumbin clinic starts with a short history and a posture check. Six to eight needles are placed in key muscle points. Small clips connect the needles to a low frequency stim unit. We use two to forty hertz for pain control and up to one hundred hertz to wake weak muscle fibres. While the machine runs you rest for about twenty minutes, which is shorter than a manual session.
Why the electrical pulse matters
Research shows electro acupuncture lifts endorphins higher than manual twirling, boosts nitric oxide so small blood vessels open wider and sends a stronger signal to the spinal pain gate. Dormant muscle fibres switch back on. These changes mean most problems improve with fewer visits.
Back pain and Sciatica
Acupuncture Hub Gold Coast clients with sciatica, often see the quickest change. By placing various needles in the gluteal motor points and adding a three hertz pulse we rebalance the hips. This may be painful for a few days after but then the pain is usually significantly reduced. Shooting pain and numbness drop in intensity within two sessions and normal walking returns sooner than with manual needling alone. Many clients sleep through the night for the first time in months after the third visit.
Patient story
Mark is a forty two year old tradesman from Palm Beach. He arrived with a three month history of tennis elbow and rated his pain at seven out of ten. After his second electro acupuncture and cupping session grip strength improved and pain fell to three. We managed to keep him working while undergoing treatment. He often comes in for preventative measure to ensure his elbow pain does not return.
Neck pain and tension headache
Low frequency current calms tight upper trapezius fibres and settles cervical nerves that run into the head. Surfers who paddle hard and office workers who stare at screens usually report smoother neck movement after two sessions.
Shoulder pain
Releasing the motor points of the neck and shoulder help loosen tight traps, rhomboid muscles and more. This can help restore function to the rotator cuff muscles. Particularly useful for frozen shoulder patients.
If you are one of the many paddlers at Currumbin, a sesion involving acupuncture and cupping could help relieve that tightness and pain.
Elbow pain
In order to treat the elbow we must release the muscles either side of the joint. With a light electro-acupuncture stimulation we can release the biceps, triceps, flexors and extensors to rid you of the pain. Suitable for tennis and golfer elbow. Grip strength returns without steroid injections and without a long rest from work or sport.
Comfort and safety
Will the treatment hurt more than regular acupuncture? No. The machine replaces strong hand twists so the feeling is lighter. Most people feel a gentle buzz that stops as soon as the current is turned off. A mild heaviness can last a few hours, and light activity such as walking or an easy surf is fine the next day. We do not place current over pacemakers or implanted defibrillators, and we avoid electrical pulses in uncontrolled seizure disorders. During the first trimester of pregnancy we use manual needling only. Every client completes a full screening form before treatment.
Number of sessions to expect
Fresh back or neck pain often improves within three appointments. Chronic shoulder or elbow pain may need six weekly sessions followed by a monthly tune up.
Evidence you can trust
A review published in Pain Medicine in 2020 compared manual needling with electro acupuncture for chronic low back pain. Electro acupuncture reduced pain scores and disability indexes more than manual treatment in eight randomised trials. A later meta analysis in 2022 found similar gains for knee arthritis. These studies match what we see in the clinic every week.

Common questions
Is electro acupuncture the same as a TENS pad? No. TENS pads sit on the skin and need higher current to reach the target. Electro acupuncture uses lower current delivered through the needle tip, guided by precise point choice, so the effect is deeper and more focused.
Can I surf or train after my session? Yes. Light activity is fine. Drink water and listen to your body. Heavy gym work for the treated muscle group can wait until tomorrow.
